STEEL-COBALT-MAGNESIUM Glow Plug:

Technology

Technological progress has enabled the development of a self-regulating armoured glow plug.
The heating resistance, in steel, maintains a constant electric resistance over the entire temperature range, resulting in very low resistance, but very high current, at maximum temperature. This would cause immediate damage, either to the glow plug, or to the electric circuit. However the regulating spiral is made of COBALT, the resistance of which increases sixfold at high temperature, which allows an equivalent reduction of the absorbed current.

These combined characteristics reduce preheating time by as much as half without increasing the current consumption.

Post Heating

MECATECH glow plugs maintain a high temperature for up to 3 minutes after the start of the engine: as the COBALT cools down, its electric resistance diminishes strongly, allowing an increase in current and post heating of the plug. Diesel engines' characteristic noises and emissions when cold are greatly reduced. These glow plugs reach 850°C in 6-7 seconds, go up to 1050°C, and then stablise in the post-heating phase, below 1000°C.

1 Power supply wire: High resistance steel conductor, capable of bearing mechanical stress. Galvanised feeding cable.

2 Insulating ring: Guarantees perfect long term insulation under any working condition

3 Sealing ring: Prevents loss of insulating powder and keeps out humidity or dirt, which may alter the dielectric features of the magnesium powder

4 Stem: Represents the extension of the power supply wire (1) and conforms to the wire's corrosion resistance

5 Body: Represents the central part of the glow plug , bonded to the sheath for perfect gas tightness, bears the mechanical and thermal stresses of the explosion chamber

6 Magnesium: Highly compacted magnesium powder to ensure a perfect insulation of the glow plug

7 Sheath: In direct contact with the combustion chamber, highly resistant thermochemical stresses and corrosion

8 Spiral: Double electric resistance mode of controlled resistivity materials capable of quickly reaching the preheating temperature and self-regulating the max working temperature
