Technological
progress has enabled the development of a self-regulating armoured
glow plug.
The heating resistance, in steel, maintains a constant electric
resistance over the entire temperature range, resulting in very
low resistance, but very high current, at maximum temperature. This
would cause immediate damage, either to the glow plug, or to the
electric circuit. However the regulating spiral is made of COBALT,
the resistance of which increases sixfold at high temperature, which
allows an equivalent reduction of the absorbed current.
These
combined characteristics reduce preheating time by as much as half
without increasing the current consumption.
Post
Heating
MECATECH
glow plugs maintain a high temperature for up to 3 minutes after
the start of the engine: as the COBALT cools down, its electric
resistance diminishes strongly, allowing an increase in current
and post heating of the plug. Diesel engines' characteristic noises
and emissions when cold are greatly reduced. These glow plugs reach
850°C in 6-7 seconds, go up to 1050°C, and then stablise
in the post-heating phase, below 1000°C.
